Mighty Warrior
“The Lord is a warrior; The Lord is His name.”
Exodus 15:3
During the COVID shutdown, Gwen purchased a subscription to “Ancestry.com.” Her interest in this topic had been stimulated by the research begun by a distant cousin on her father’s side of the family.
Pictures were sent and details were offered about Warners and Kents from the distant past. And I mean distant! For example, it was discovered that her 7x Great-grandfather, John Kent, immigrated to the New World in 1645, just 25 years after the original Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower.
She also learned that her family had a consistent presence on the battlefield. Both Isaac Kent and Isaac Kent Jr. fought for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. And Charles H. Kent had a strategic responsibility with the Union Army during the Civil War.
She’s still filling in many gaps, but I couldn’t help but think how that legacy continued, ultimately including Gwen’s father, Timothy Warner, who landed on Omaha Beach on D+100 and was part of the American force at the Battle of the Bulge.
My dad, Jim DeSelm, also played a role in World War 2. Enlisting in the Navy after high school, he was aboard a destroyer tender that was posted in the Pacific Theater. It was there that he endured the harrowing kamikaze attacks surrounding the battle for Okinawa.
On this Memorial Day, Gwen and I remember those in our family tree who fought for our freedom. And we honor them for that.
Mighty to Save
But have you ever considered that there is One who we would do well to remember and honor even more? Exodus 15:3 notes that “The Lord is a warrior; The Lord is His name.”
The prophet Zephaniah writes, “The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior” (3:17). And Jeremiah adds, “…the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior” (20:11).
The Bible doesn’t shy away from this aspect of who our God is. Perhaps that’s because there are still so many battles to be fought before He returns in glory and we need the encouragement that we have Heaven’s Champion fighting for us.
Are you facing battles in your life?
The battle for your physical health?
The battle for your emotional stability?
The battle for your family’s unity?
The battle for your financial security?
Whatever form they may take, remember this: Our God is a warrior and He is mighty to save. So, look to Him. Cry out to Him. And rest in the confident truth that we don’t fight for victory but from victory.
Jesus has already triumphed through His death and resurrection. All we’re waiting for is the last trumpet which will signal His glorious return as conqueror.
John describes that moment in his dazzling vision of the future in the book of Revelation. Read his words with a sense of high anticipation and hope.
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Revelation 19:11-16
