An Election Day Reminder
I don’t know about you, but I am really ready for this presidential election to be over. I’m ready for an end to the rancor and tackiness. I’m ready for an end to the accusations and theatrics.
In talking with family and friends, I’ve discovered that I’m not alone in this. Indeed, voters on both sides feel frustrated, even embarrassed by it all.
Beyond that, however, there is something else that is shared – a visceral fear, an angst about the result. What if "so and so" wins? When we wake up on Wednesday, when the votes have been counted and the confetti is swept away, what will we see?
I have a prediction. I know exactly what November 6 will bring. Another day of God’s perfect sovereignty. He will still be in charge. His throne will still be occupied. He will still manage the affairs of the world.
I’m not saying that this election isn’t important or that who is in the Oval Office doesn’t matter. I’m simply seeking to bring some needed perspective.
Scripture tells us, “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all.” Psalm 103:19
God's Sovereignty Over Kings
Never in history has God's providence depended on a king, president, or ruler. And it won’t on November 6, 2024.
Indeed, God has shown time and again that He is in fact the one who is ultimately in control. He rules over the nations (Ps. 22:28) and He can work in and through the worst of human rulers.
Consider this: The LORD can control a king’s mind as He controls a river; He can direct it as He pleases. (Proverbs 21:1 NCV)
By way of example:
On one occasion He worked in Darius, King of Assyria, so that he aided in the construction of the Temple.
On another occasion he stirred Cyrus, the King of Persia, to release the captive Jews to return to their homeland.
Then there was the time he moved in the mind of Augustus, Emperor of Rome, to order a census and get Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem.
Understanding God’s sovereignty over the nations opens the door to peace. When we realize that God influences the hearts of all rulers, we can then choose to pray for them rather than fret about them. Rather than wring our hands, we bend our knees, selecting prayer over despair.
Many will celebrate this year’s election results. And many others will not. Yet no matter which side of the race you’ve been on over these long months, this truth remains: God is still on His throne! He is still on His throne today. And will be tomorrow as well.
God’s got this. He’s got us. And He is powerful and able to do far more than we could ever imagine.
