Astronomic Perspective

You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the people.

Psalm 77:14

You may have no sensation of motion right now, but that is an illusion of miraculous proportion. The reality is you are on a planet that is spinning around on its axis at a speed of approximately 1,000 miles per hour.  Feeling a bit dizzy?

That’s not all. Besides rotating, planet Earth is speeding through space at approximately 67,000 miles per hour.  So even on a day when you feel as if you didn’t get much done, you traveled 1,608,000,000 (that’s billion with a “b”) miles.

Now let me ask: When was the last time you thanked God for keeping us in orbit?  I’m guessing the answer is never. Why? Because God is so good at what He does that we take it for granted.  Never once have I knelt and prayed, “Lord, you did it again.  We made the full rotation today. I’m so grateful.”

Here’s the point.  There are people, and perhaps you are one of them, who would say they’ve never witnessed a miracle. With all due respect, I beg to differ. We experience a miracle of literally astronomical proportions each and every day.

Everyday Miracles

The irony is that we already trust God for the big miracles, like keeping Earth in orbit. Now the trick is trusting Him for the lesser miracles that we long to see as we walk on that earth.

A miracle is defined as “a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.” As such miracles are typically considered to be quite rare.

Yet the Bible would suggest that, for believers, that is simply not the case. Why? Because of the greatness of our God.

The psalmist wrote, “You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples” (Psalm 77:14).

When you stop to think about it, every prayer you utter is a cry for a miracle. You are asking for a situation to be reversed…a circumstance to be changed…a need to be met. You are asking God to bring His power to bear.

And you know what?  He loves to do just that.

Another psalmist wrote, “This poor man cried to the Lord – and the Lord heard him and saved him out of his troubles” (Psalm 34:6).

Yet notice the process. The man cried out to the Lord…the Lord heard him… and then the Lord saved him. That is to say, intercession was necessary to trigger intervention.

Limitless Power, Limitless Love

And the beauty of this is that there is no limit to how big you can ask. At no time are we ever told, “But make sure your requests are reasonable.  Don’t ask for too much.”

Why? Because God’s power is as limitless as His love. Thus it is that we are told:

  • “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify Me” (Psalm 59:15)

  • “Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear you” (Jeremiah 29:12).

  • “Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer…” (Isaiah 58:9).

In the spirit of this, Jesus makes this amazing offer to His followers: “Ask, and it will be given to you, seek, and you will find, knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

This is the stance the Lord takes with regard to our prayers. To be sure, at times He chooses to answer them in ways we hadn’t hoped for. But that’s because His ultimate purposes and plans are otherwise. It’s not because we asked too big.

So let me encourage you to do that. Our is a God of the miraculous. Let’s not insult Him by asking too small.
